Guide: Managing Notifications

Posted in Categories / Groups:

On Ancestorian, you can decide what notifications you want to receive and how often you want to receive them.  This Guide tells you how you can manage the following:

  • Website notifications via your Profile; and
  • Group notifications from within a group you have joined.

Website Notifications Via your Profile

Getting to the Right Page on the Website to Manage Website Notifications

To get to your Profile ‘Notifications’ page:

Go to the Menu Tabs at the top of the website.

Click on:

‘Profile’ → ‘Change Notification Settings’

On your mobile phone, you can find this via the Hamburger Menu at the top of your screen

→ ‘Profile → ‘Change Notification Settings’

Alternatively, on your computer, you can use the menu on the left hand-side of the Website.

Click on ‘Preferences’

Managing Notifications

Whether you follow the above instructions on your computer or your mobile phone, it will take you to the ‘Notifications’ section within your own Profile.

This is what the top of the page looks like.

Each of the sections on the page are explained below:

In this section on your Profile ‘Notifications’ page, you can decide how often you want to get e-mail notifications.  You can choose between the following:

All enabled e-mail notifications will be sent out immediately.

Two hours

You will receive a summary of unread on-site notifications approximately every two hours.

Three hours

You will receive a summary of unread on-site notifications approximately every three hours.

Four times a day

You will receive a summary of unread on-site notifications approximately four times a day.

Two times a day

Once a day

Never

Some people like to get their notifications by email, some like to get them via the on-site notification only, and some have a preference for both types of notification. This section provides you with options that enable you to quickly manage all your preferences with one click.

Enable all:

Enables all notifications – both e-mail and on-site notifications.

Disable all:

Disable e-mails:

Reset to default:

 Resets to website default.

The default position has no notifications at all for the ‘Group Subscriptions’ category; neither on-site nor e-mail.  The default for the other categories is as follows:

This section allows you to selectively decide whether you want ‘On-Site’ or ‘Email’ notifications for each category, including ‘Group Subscriptions’

Managing Notifications for a Group from Within the Group

You can also manage notifications group by group within each of the groups you have joined:

Click on ‘Manage Notifications’ on the group photo.

This will then give you the following options:

  • Manage – Show posts from this group in ‘my following stream’
  • Notifications – Be notified about the new posts in this group (this is referring to ‘on-site’ notifications)
  • Receive e-mails – Receive e-mails about new posts in this group
